About me and my work

Lisa Gee © Alexandra Ciufudean

I was the last Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Ego Media project: I started work in October 2018 – two months after the award of my PhD and seven months before the project was originally due to conclude. My main task was to work with the Ego Media team and King’s Digital Lab to deliver this digital publication. With colleagues, I co-presented the project at conferences in China and Greece.

During the project extension period, I also kept the Ego Media blog updated.

Other work

My other roles include

  • Assistant Professor in Creative Writing and Digital Media at the University of Birmingham
  • External Research Consultant in the William Hayley Papers at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge (see our pilot digital edition of Hayley’s correspondence at https://amor.fitz.ms/)
  • Facilitator for HSM collaboration jams
  • Lead Associate Director of Furner Communications Ltd, where I have been leading our work on the Health Foundation’s Inclusion Panel.

I have a background in communications across public, voluntary, and third sectors; am the author of Friends: Why Men and Women Are from the Same Planet (Bloomsbury) and Stage Mum (Random House/Arrow); and the editor of Bricks without Mortar: The Selected Poems of Hartley Coleridge.

I have written (mostly about books or music) for most national newspapers, edited the (then) Orange Prize for Fiction – now the Women’s Prize for Fiction – website for a decade, and am a late convert to academia.

Lisa on academic identity

Video 1.

The conclusions that I’ve drawn from my project about the nature of identity came to me as quite a surprise. One of the things that it threw up was how closely a lot of my colleagues identified not only with their role as academics or scholars, but with their specific discipline. I hadn’t expected that they would identify so closely with specific methodologies and specific ways of working.
